About the Center for European Studies

The Stanford Center for European Studies promotes the research and study of European cultures, histories, and structures. It serves as an umbrella organization for scholars in the Humanities and Social Sciences whose research focuses on Europe, crosswise spatially between Russia and the Iberian Penninsula, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, and chronologically between Late Antiquity and the Twentieth Century. The Center brings together scholars and students from both Stanford and cognate European institutions to foster scholarship on, and teaching in European topics. It builds on departments and area studies programs in the Humanities and Social Sciences, while fostering interdisciplinary and international cooperation.
